“My Give Up!” -Jar Jar Binks
If it looks like a fair fight…run.
I have only been in a few physical altercations in my day, and I can say that I only lost one. The one that I lost, I really got creamed. I ran my mouth. The other guy turned around, punched me in the face and gave me a black eye. It was a black eye that I urgently needed and absolutely deserved. A good black eye is a humbling but enlightening experience.
Conflict for the right reason is how things get done. It can be a breakthrough…a way to get to the true issue. As a leader, it is your job to push through the barriers that are unreasonable, unjust or unfair.
But, the best time to surrender is before you start the fight.
Count the cost before the first swing is thrown. If you are outmatched, you can loose and further the wrong agenda. One right word in the inner circle is much more powerful than a chorus of complaints on the outside.
Sometimes the best thing to do is to simply….run. Wait for the right fight, at the right time.
One last thought. Even if you are 100% right, you can still get the stuffing beat of you. You might just deserve it. Believe me. I know.
